USING
UNESCO'S TOOLS
The different
Sectors of UNESCO regularly publish free newsletters which are
presented below.
THE
NEW COURRIER
Non specialized
UNESCO publication, the New Courier briefly presents some activities
of the different Sectors of the Organization in the section "UNESCO
in action" concerning Education, Culture, Science, Communication
and Human and Social Sciences. "UNESCO in brief"
does not go into details about any precise subject but gives an
outlook of the numerous actions set up by UNESCO. "The
world in brief" offers some rapid news about the world;
in the April 2003 edition the receding of freedom of speech. In
every issue will find an interview with a specialist: the special
issue of January 2004 gives the floor to Edgar Morin, sociologist
and philosopher, who discusses about the "Dialogue among
civilizations" which is the main theme of this issue.

"Focus"
is the section dedicated to the central subject of the issue (like,
for example: water). The theme is also evocated in the section
"Archives" which presents previous pictures or
illustrations showing that UNESCO already got involved with that
subject.
"Partners" outlines actions made by States, NGOs
and firms with UNESCO's help (in the April 2003 issue the action
of the Cambodian Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, with
the technical support of UNESCO and UNICEF, on a preventing campaign
on AIDS, is described. Many pictures present a subject in "Zoom",
for examples: pictures from St Petersburg, or the Associated schools
network. Artists are exposed in the rubric "Gallery".
We can also find the new publications of UNESCO in "Just
Published".

SHS
NEWSLETTER
The SHS Newsletter
is a quarterly information edition which presents different aspects
of the action set up by UNESCO in the Human and Social Sciences
field.
 |
It
is based on a simple philosophy "to sow thought is to
harvest action" and, for that, the edition has a double
aim: first, to tell us on its activities and then make us
join its debates on UNESCO working themes, through many articles
and one "interview" by issue. In the first
one, Boutros Boutros-Ghali exposes the actions of the International
Panel for Democracy and Development (IPDD). This issue shows
several actions set up by UNESCO in the Human and Social Sciences
field. |
A "Dossier"
is dedicated to a leading subject and to UNESCO activities on
the theme, like in the third issue in which a dossier was made
on the International Declaration on human genetic data. Works,
newly published by UNESCO and dedicated to Human and Social Sciences,
are described in the "Just Published" section.
A "Calendar" enumerates future happenings around
Human and Social Sciences in the framework of the Organization.
The publication
is available on www.unesco.org/shs
in French and English.
