News from Latin America-Carabbean region

It is according to the slogan " knowing each other better for a betterorganizing " that the Latin America and Caribbean UNESCO Clubs regional meeting was held in Costa Rica from 19 to March 21 2002. Representatives from many Federations were attending this meeting, whether as participants or as observers. Participants were Costa Rica, Haiti, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago, and Uruguay. Observers were Chile, France (Guyana), St Lucia and the Dominican Republic. In addition to sharing pilot and practical experiences,
the meeting aimed to cover the following subjects:

  • Establish / reinforce relations between UNESCO, WFUCA, National Commissions and regional UNESCO Clubs movement.
  • Thinking about the " Dialogue Between Civilizations ".
  • Identifying the ways in order to improve the relations with WFUCA others areas, and create a sub-regional structure.
  • Strengthening the movement and opening it to other countries from this area.
  • Preparing a spec sheet for all the Federations and Clubs taking part to this meeting.

The Clubs acting in the region:

  • 45 Clubs in Costa Rica concentrate their work on schools, developing topics such as Respect, Tolerance, Solidarity and Environment protection. On the basis that Peace is also established through Culture, the topics treated are very mixed: theatre, dance, music, ecology, and values. Young people are very active in those clubs, they constantly express their desire to expand the movement inside the area and to carry out more exchanges and contacts with other countries, often confessing their ignorance of the Caribbean cultures.

  • In Trinidad and Tobago, the Clubs did a lot of work with young people in particular for the organization of an International Carnival where they could share ideas with members of other Clubs in the area. To make some of them aware of their misfit's condition, the clubs used theatre, talking and several workshops.
