Kit
on combating desertification

The
UNESCO Program MAB (Man and Biosphere) fights against desertification,
and this kit presents some suggestions to act in this field. There
are 4 documents.
A
cartoon: "The school where the magic tree grows",
inspired by the story of the children of Recoleta (Chile), shows
their struggle against desertification. Children are able to read
this book by themselves.
Two
other books are included in the kit. The Teacher's Guide, "Learn
to combat desertification", comprises 20 units. Each
unit, covering four pages, is illustrated with photographs and
attractive graphics, and proposes classroom activities intended
to raise awareness on environmental protection. "Combating
desertification bears fruits" presents concrete projects
managed by NGOs, such as irrigation in the oasis areas.
"A
planisphere" shows the desertification situation in the
world. The kit is principally targeted to teachers for the last
classes of primary school education.

The
kit proposes an original teaching for young people12-17 years
old. Its aim is helping young people in understanding relations
between energy, development and environment, in order to become
involved in the survival of our planet.
The
kit contains 5 documents: 4 books and 1 video. "Le livret
du maître" (the teachers handbook) presents the
kit and its environment, the method for using it and examples
of actions. The document "Les cas d'études"
(study cases) deals with concrete ecological problems such as
Tchernobyl and its consequences in Ukraine. "The video",
with short sequences, focuses on questions about Energy, Development
and Environment. "Le livret Fiches documentaires et indicateurs"
(the documentary booklet) contains a lot of data and information
with graphs, charts and figures, and schemes… about the three
themes. The last document "Activités pédagogiques"
(pedagogical activities) proposes practical activities in order
to encourage young people in better understanding the world and
acting.

A parlour game, "Terra", was created for the "Forum
Barcelona 2004" in order to teach the very young people that
the future of the planet depends on everyone of us. It can
be played by 3 to 6 players.
The
game was co-created by UNESCO, the 2004 Barcelona Forum and the
Holos NGO. Its purpose is to find solutions to resolve the crisis
in the world (ecological disasters, socio-economical difficulties
and diplomatic challenges).
