Kit "HIV/ AIDS and Human rights" (English, French, Spanish, Russian)


The kit presents ideas for youth action on Human rights ad HIV/AIDS; several brochures are gathered in this kit. "Basics to get started", the first brochure gives some information about Human rights and HIV/AIDS and some advice to realize actions, in order to fight against permanent disease.
The purpose of "Education and communication" is rejecting prejudices about AIDS, and helping to communicate about HIV/AIDS; there are some proposals for group activities such as role playing. "Advocacy" deals with the law and the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS.
"States have to act", demanding for a fair access to health care and treatment. "Support and care", as in the previous brochures, offers groups activities; this brochure focuses on making life easier for infected young people and especially injecting drug users.
"Glossary" explains some technical words about HIV/AIDS .

AIDS and Theatre (French, English, Spanish, and Arabic in 2005 )

"AIDS and Theatre" was published in June 2003 by UNESCO and UNAIDS. This handbook permits to explain groups how to use theatre in the struggle against HIV/AIDS.
The first Part aims at improving the knowledge of groups; for example, it answers the question "which are causes and symptoms of HIV/AIDS? "
The second Part: "How to use the theatre to sensitize about HIV/AIDS" evokes "forum theatre", interactive theatre facilitating the circulation of the message.
The third Part deals with the realization of the play, "How to write a text about HIV/AIDS", discovering the idea (a few example of ideas are proposed, such as negotiation for using condoms), definition of the characters, creation of the story and finally writing of the dialogue.
The 4th Part focuses on the realization of the play, acting, decor…

Finally the "Appendices" teaches "theatre forum" initiation and gives two examples of play: the struggle between "SIDA" and Fagga, prevention is better than cure; a "Glossary" gives the meaning of specifics words as HIV, condom….

Culture of democracy: a challenge for schools (English, French, Spanish)  

This book offers the reader a wide range of activities, involved in culture of democracy in several countries. There are 6 chapters. "Fragments of the culture of democracy: analysis": this chapter presents the cultural diversity within schools. Chapter 2 "Teaching democratic principles in pre-school education: the link with society" presents a Costa Rican example: a school welcoming a disabled child, as an experiment in tolerance between pupils. Chapter 3 "Learning about citizenship at primary school: the example of the Republic of Korea" presents current curriculum on civics and education to democracy at elementary-school level program, what is in perfect accordance with the main issue of this book. Chapter 4 "Secondary education: Participating in the culture of democracy" deals with a Hungarian example (a programme launched in 1990): the establishment of two Summer schools in 1991, around the topic on democratic values. "Training teachers, the people who open the door to democratic life" (Chapter 5). Several examples are presented, such as the case of Colombia where democratic channels of communication were set up and documents about the 1991 Constitution produced. "Education for democracies: synthesis" (Chapter 6) sums up the main ideas of the Book. Finally "Appendix" presents the "World Plan of Action on Education for Human Rights and Democracy".

A Handbook for Human Rights Education

This 160 pages Handbook is written for young people 8 to18 years old and over.
In the first Part: "An approach to Human Rights" it deals with the Human Rights in their globality, about their values (such as the struggle against discrimination), or about the various Conventions. For example, the African Charter on the Human Rights and on the Rights of the People.
The Chapter 2: "A method for Humans Rights Education" focuses on the role of the teachers who will have to conduct some activities in this field.
Chapter 3: "Understanding Human Rights in the Classroom" presents some articles from different texts about basic freedoms, such as "Tolerance and peace in inter-ethnic relations": the activity consists in observing war's pictures and analyzing the situation, in order to put into light the reasons and consequences of that conflict (this activity is in connection with Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and with Article 6 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and of the International Pact on Civil and Political Rights).
This Handbook presents two games for kids (7 to 12 years old): "A game based on the French Jeu de l'oie" concerning the children rights and "Jeunes, à vos droits", game to be set up by the players.

""Tolerance- The threshold of peace" "Teacher-training unit", is one of the 3 units of the series.
This unit is aimed at teachers, educators, community actors, parents and social workers, so as to manage how to teach tolerance. This document is divided into 6 parts: "Why educate for tolerance?", "Diagnosing intolerance and describing tolerance", "Problems and possibilities of educating for tolerance", "Tolerance in the school: a laboratory for the practice of tolerance", "Suggestions for teaching tolerance" and "Popular education and popular movements: learning for democracy and peace".

 

Many activities are presented in one chapter, such as for example in the 4th: "Learning experience", which consists in answering questions to set up an evaluation of the level of knowledge of the community. The most frequent activity is "For study and discussing" concluding each chapter, such as in chapter 2: "Using Human Rights to Diagnose Intolerance".
In addition, there are some appendices such as "Resources", "Declaration and integrated Framework of Action on Education for Peace", "Human Rights", "Democracy and Declaration of Principles on Tolerance"

Primary -school resource unit

"Primary-school resource unit" is the second handbook of "Tolerance-the threshold of peace".
The document contains five parts; "Diagnosing intolerance among students and teachers", "Characteristics of the tolerant classroom", "A process approach to learning the realms of tolerance", "Learning goals of education for peace, human rights and democracy" and "Selected learning activities to serve as suggested approaches".
"Living with human diversity", the first theme, suggest an activity for the 5 to 9 years old: "The Ugly Duckling: a story of prejudice and exclusion" explaining the reasons of the discrimination towards the Duckling.
One other topic: "Dealing with conflict: skills and values" presents activities such as "Bullyproof: preventing violence" dealing with a rap song about non-violent conflict resolution.
"Exercising responsibility": one of the suggested activities is "The fundamental ethics of human relations" which quotes sentences extracted from different religious texts. Young people must think on what is the common message they all try to convey.
There are some appendices "Universal Declaration of Human rights", "Declaration on the Rights of the Child", "A look at the Convention on the Rights of the Child" .

Secondary- school resource unit

The third handbook of "Tolerance-the threshold of peace" targeted for young people 13 to 18 years old. It follows the same scheme as the previous one. There are 5 chapters the last one of them entitled "Selected learning activities to serve as suggested approaches" proposes some activities.
The other chapters are: "Diagnosing intolerance among students and teachers at the secondary level", "Responding to a major problem of adolescent intolerance: bullying", "Suggested content for a process approach to learning the realms of tolerance at the secondary school level" and "Learning goals of education for peace, human rights and democracy".
The chapter 5, divided into 3 parts, proposes: "Living with Human diversity", "Dealing with conflict" and "Exercising Responsibility". Each part suggests different activities such as "Games for teaching perspectives". The participants have to debate on prejudices and their consequences.
There are three appendices "Universal Declaration of Human Rights", "Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women" and "Declaration on the Rights Belonging to National or Ethnic, Religious and Linguistic Minorities" .
