  Struggle against slavery (English, French)


In the framework of the "International year to commemorate the struggle against slavery and its abolition", the Division for Cultural Policies and Intercultural Dialogue published a magazine "Struggles against slavery" including a message of the Director-General of UNESCO. The major events of this year to commemorate the abolition, are quickly presented.
"Against slavery: the ongoing struggle" from Nelly Schmidt - National Centre for Scientific Research, University Paris IV, France - tells us the history of the slavery with the support of a map.
"The slave route" showing the evolution of the slave trade along the centuries. We can also discover illustrations of the slaves' life condition.

  The Sahara of Cultures and People (English, French)


"The Sahara of Cultures and People", published in July 2003, deals with the development of tourism in Sahara, in the context of eradicating poverty. The Part one "The current status of the Sahara: A complex and varied territory" presents the Sahara (for example: "The cultural heritage: diversity and fragility" where some archaeological sites are mentioned such as Gilf Kebir in Egypt or Serkout in Algeria…).
The Part two "Towards a strategy for the sustainable development of tourism in the Sahara: Recommendations", focuses on different solutions to reach in developing Sahara; "For sustainable Saharan tourism: What action, according to what ethics?" gives some proposals such as ideas of regulations like harmonizing the prices of services. Then, the Ghardaïa Declaration is presented in this Brochure with its own Draft Plan of Action. There is also a bibliography. Finally we can find some Annexes, such as Annex 2: "World heritage sites and biosphere reserves in the Sahara" .

  All different, All Unique (English, French)

"All different, all unique: Young people and the UNESCO Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity", is a Brochure published by the Culture Sector. The publication deals, in its first Part, with the UNESCO Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity.
Then, each article of the Declaration is written in youth-friendly version; the articles are linked with discussion and/or action points; for example the Article 5, focussing on the respect for cultural rights, proposes a survey to discover how many languages are existing today in local areas. The document gives some examples of initiatives proposed by young people

  Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity (English, French)

"First proclamation of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity" "Second Proclamation of Masterpieces…" those two booklets present about 50 masterpieces, as "the Carnival of Barranquilla" a piece of the Colombian intangible heritage.

Each masterpiece is illustrated with a picture. The first pages of each brochure deals with "The Proclamation of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity", "The Definition, Objectives, Procedure, Criteria" and "The UNESCO's action in favour of the intangible cultural heritage". A world map shows all "The masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity".

Brief description of the 754 properties inscribed on the World Heritage List 2003  (English, French)
 

"The brief description 2003" presents all properties inscribed on the World Heritage List including those inscribed during the 27th Session of the World Heritage Committee (June/July 2003). All the World Cultural Heritage Properties are shortly described. They are presented country by country. Even if no picture illustrates the description, the document is very useful.
